Initial Conversation and Training


Listen to the following conversation between Bob Turner and a shop keeper.

Tindera: Ano po ang kailangan ninyo, mama?
What do you need, sir?

Bob: Naghahanap ako ng magandang burdadong polo barong.
I’m looking for a nice embroidered polo barong.

Tindera: Para sa inyo ba?
For you?

Bob: Hindi, para sa aking kapatid na lalaki sa Amerika.
No, for my brother in America.

Tindera: Anong sukat niya?
What’s his size?

Bob: Midyum, katulad ko.
Medium, like me.

Tindera: Mamili kayo rito.
(You) choose from here.

Bob: Maaari bang isukat ko ang kulay asul?
Can I try the blue one one?

Tindera: Oo, maaari.
Yes, you can.

Bob: Hindi magkasiya ito sa akin. Masikip nang kaunti.
This doesn’t fit me. A little too tight.

Tindera: Eto ang malaki-laki. Isukat ninyo.
Here’s one a little larger. Try it on.

Bob: Aba, tamang-tama ito! Magkano ito?
Ah, this is just right! How much is this?

Tindera: Nobentay sais pesos.
Ninety-size pesos.

Now it’s your turn to practice speaking.

At a clothing store the sales lady asked Bob what he needs.

Listen:

Listen again to the word used to address someone whose name you don’t know. We practiced it before, so try and pronounce it correctly.

For clothing sizes in the Philippines the English word large, medium and small are used.

Exercise 2: Practice Responding to “What do you need?”

In this exercise you will practice responding to “Ano po ang kailangan ninyo?” (What do you need?)

You will respond by saying “I am looking for” followed by what you are looking for.

You will be asked the question in Tagalog, then you hear the name of what you are looking for, then you will reply to the question.

For example, you are asked, “Ano po ang kailangan ninyo?

Then you hear, “T-Shirt”

You say, “Naghahanap ako ng kamiseta.”

To ask the saleswoman if you can try on the blue, “polo barong“. Bob says:

Exercise 8: Asking for Clothing Item by Color

Let’s try asking for an item of clothing by color.

If you hear “kamisonitim

SAY

“Gusto ko ang kamisong itim.|”

Don’t forget the linkers. Even if the color is said before the item of clothing the linkers are used in the same way.

Exercise 10: Practice saying I Like this and these

You are going to practice saying “I like this” or “I like these.”

For example, if you hear, “blusa“, say, “Gusto ko ito.

But, if you hear, “mga blusa“, say, “Gusto ko mga ito.

Remember that, “mga” is used to form plurals.

Exercise 11: Practicing That and Those

Exercise 11.  To say “I like that” pointing to something close to the saleswoman, say:

Gusto ko iyan.

To point to more than one you say:

To point out something by color, yellow for example, you say:

“Those yellow ones” is “ang mga dilaw na iyan

Tagalog has another word meaning “that over there”.
